NEW BoxWave FlexiSkin Case for Treo 700p review by Alex Mathews

The BoxWave FlexiSkin Case is a skin case that is made of a soft rubber polymer. Skin cases are popular since they provide an always there protection while keeping the Treo usable while the case is one. The added bulk of the skin case does make it a bit more difficult to use with most cradles and even cases when you want to give the Treo even added protection. There are options for holsters and pouch cases that can accommodate a Treo with a skin case on.

NEW iStyles Treo Privacy Screen Protector review by Alex Mathews

The iStyles Treo Privacy Screen Protector is different from your typical screen protector. The claim is that besides protecting the screen, it also obscures the view of the screen when viewed at an angle from the side. It is definitely a feature I know some would be interested in, especially those that have to commute on a train, subway, or bus. You don't always have the space to keep prying eyes a good distance away. People tend to be nosy or just plain curious about what you're doing when it seems to be interesting.

Nite Ize Tooth Ferry Headset Carrier review by Alex Mathews

The Nite Ize Tooth Ferry Headset Carrier is something I've been seeing as a accessory that really needed to be created. I'm surprised that a carrier like this has taken so long to come out, since the problem it addresses has existed ever since the first Bluetooth headset was released to the consumer market. Now, trying to address this problem for just about every Bluetooth headset that exists on the market doesn't lend itself to a simple solution. Can a headset carrier that advertises itself truly be universal? The packaging is quite simple but does convey the purpose and intention of the product to be universal.

PalmAddict: Making Opera Mini 4.1 Broswer work for Palm OS
v
[From ScottyB] Hearing all the hooplaa about the Opera Mobile 9.5 beta for Windows Mobile, I thought hey, what about my Palm OS Treo??? I was feeling a bit left out in the cold, so I decided to do some snooping and ended up hopping over to Opera.com and downloaded and installed the latest browser for my Treo 680, which is Opera Mini 4.1. At this point I'm feeling like a kid in a candy store, hoping to experience my wildest browsing wonders!!! Not!!! When I tried to open the Opera application, after it started the initial launch setup, all I got was crash, reset, crash, reset, crash, reset...All my excitement was dashed!!!

Palmdoc: A Bluetooth headset is now a must
v
Those of you in California would have had to get one as of this year. Where I live, using a hands-free kit has been compulsory for years - though I really think it doesn’t impact that much on road safety as using a mobile phone in any way when driving is just as bad!

Palm Blog: The Sprint Centro gets a boost
v
A new software tune up for the Sprint Centro gives your smartphone several new features and shortcuts. One highlight is support for the My Location feature in Google Mobile Maps. My Location approximates your location so when you're getting directions, you only need to select “My Location” rather than input your address. This makes it even easier to find nearby restaurants or businesses, check local traffic, or find the best route to your next destination.

Get information on the product enhancements included in the update and download instructions on Palm's support site.

Geek.com: Use your smartphone to find a parking spot
v
If you live in a big city, then you probably know all about the perils of trying to park your car. It’s flat-out difficult.

San Francisco, being the tech-savvy city that it is, has come up with a potential solution. Beginning this fall, the city will begin testing a system that allows drivers to use their cell phones (as well as signs located near the spots) to locate an open spot.

Through a series of aptly named “bumps”, the system will be able to use pressure-sensing technology to discover if there is a car parked in a spot or not. All of the “bumps” will be networked and will send info in real-time to a website that can be accessed via a smartphone (while you’re driving around?).

Treocentral: Sprint's SERO Is Out, EPRP Is In
v
All good things must come to an end - three-day weekends, full body massages and now the Sprint SERO plans that we have known for so long. With only a Sprint employee's email address (now you also need the last three digits of a Sprint employee's CID) you were granted access to some of the best deals in wireless, with plans starting from just $30 a month for 500 minutes. The real savings was what was also included - all SERO plans included unlimited data, free minutes after 7pm, unlimited weekend minutes and from time-to-time the plans also included unlimited text messages. Until just recently, that is.

Next time you want to help “take a bit out of crime” reach for your mobile phone. According to an Associated Press article, police departments are embracing the idea of allowing citizens to text in tips about criminal activity in their area. Traditionally, local police departments have relied on a Crime Stoppers hotline, which asks people to phone in if they have any information regarding an existing case or other criminal activity in their area.

The text messaging system, which allows text messages to be sent anonymously, will encrypt a caller’s phone number before it is sent on to police.

TamsPalm: On the history of PalmSource installer
v
Former PalmSource employee Chris Dunphy worked on the program that we all know as PalmSource installer. A few of you will also know that PalmSource originally planned something similar to the recently-launched Apple Application Store.

Dave’s article begins with the following bold statements:

I had two consistent recommendations on what to focus on to maximize the success and competitive differentiation of Palm hardware and the Palm platform.

1) Build a great touchscreen phone with a 320×480 screen.
2) More importantly - build a great on-device application purchase experience, and provide the infrastructure to make it as easy as possible for both large and small developers to get rich.

Treocentral: Treo 800w Review Roundup
v
Palm's latest WM Treo smartphone is here and reviews are going up. Some are saying that the Treo 800w is the best Treo to date. Let's take a look at some of the reviews and hands-on articles circulating. These are just the first ones that I've come upon. There are many more out there, and I'll update when I have time. I just put them in the order in which I found them online.

I always enjoy reading several reviews on a device because I want to know the differing opinions. You need to know the positives and negatives and every little thing you can find out about a device when you're looking to buy one. There are almost always some negative points to every device, and it's good to know if the positives outweighs the negatives. So let's dig in and see what the consensus is on the Treo 800w.

CNBC: Korean carrier in talks to buy Sprint
v
NEW YORK - South Korea's SK Telecom Corp. is in talks to buy struggling U.S. wireless carrier Sprint Nextel Corp., business news channel CNBC reported Tuesday

An agreement would be at best weeks away, CNBC said, citing people familiar with the talks.

Sprint shares closed up 9 percent at $9.04.

U.S.-listed shares of SK Telecom, Korea's largest mobile-phone service operator by subscriber numbers, fell 2 percent to $20.67.

"SK Telecom is considering various business opportunities in overseas markets, including the U.S.," company spokeswoman Lauren Kim said in Seoul. "We have no comments regarding any specific opportunities at the moment." Sprint spokesman James Fisher had no comment on the report.

Treocentral Review: Sprint Palm Treo 800w
v
Treocentral has published a review of the Sprint Palm Treo 800w.

After all that, what's my final verdict on the Treo 800w? It's this: The Treo 800w is the best Treo ever. That shouldn't surprise anybody, it's the newest Treo and so it ought to beat out its predecessors. Here's the surprising part:

The Treo 800w is the the most productive Windows Mobile Pro device I've ever used.

If you need your phone to be shiny with lots of eye candy and other tomfoolery, the iPhone or the Touch Diamond are up your alley. If you need your phone to allow you to get work done, the 800w should be on your short list. It's very fast, well-integrated with the hardware, and has been bug free so far in my testing.

Given the state of the smartphone world today, I'm betting that many in the business set won't be getting the message about the Treo 800w, and that's a shame. It's more than competitive with the current generation of BlackBerrys (better, in my opinion) and even holds up fairly decently against the upcoming BlackBerry Bold (except, of course, in the looks department).

As for those of us who like to call ourselves "power users," the 800w has enough speed and space to handle pretty much any app or customization you might want to throw at it. It's a worthy successor to the venerable Treo 700wx, I just wish that it had arrived a year ago.

Treocentral: Palm Announces Sprint Treo 800w
v

Well, after many leaked shots and leaked data sheets and forum members getting the device in their hands early, Palm this morning announced the newest WM Treo, the Palm Treo 800w on Sprint. The 800w became available on Sprint's website Sunday morning. The Treo 800w is a nice slate blue color and resembles the design of the Centro. The 800w has the soft touch paint like the Treo 750 which gives it a nice grip. The 800w is the first Palm WM Treo to have a 320 x 320 display. The other WM Treos had 240 x 240 screens. Some apps might not work very well yet with this new screen resolution. For example, forum member Darth Pooh said that after installing Skype on his 800w, the resolution doesn't fit the 320 320 screen, and he got a message saying, "We're sorry...cannot start Skype" and the Skype crashed.

But I read in another post that the 320 x 320 resolution helped with some apps that didn't look good on the 700wx. Forum member MBC said:

The high-res screen actually helped with some of my apps on the 800w that looked rather stupid on my 700wx. An example of that would be WeatherPanel. I love how it looks on the Touch, but I hated it on my 700wx. It seems that the 800w adjusts the resolution of the app to make it "fit" onto the screen. So now it looks oddly small, but it is very usable and functional. I'm also looking for resolution settings for this, but who knows if I will find them.

Of course the biggest newness of the Treo 800w is that it's the first Palm smartphone ever to have built-in Wi-Fi! About time, huh? I hope that the rest of the Palm smartphones also start shipping with built-in Wi-Fi. The word in the forums regarding web browsing is that it's much quicker with REV A and the Wi-Fi is even faster. Sweet!

Another plus for the 800w is that it has GPS. Forum members who have already purchased an 800w say that the GPS works great. The 800w has a "Point of Interest" lookup field on the Today screen which comes in handy. You can find a post office, an ATM machine, or a pizza place, etc,.

CNNMoney.com: Verizon Wireless Suit Settlement Puts Sprint At Risk
v
NEW YORK -(Dow Jones)- Verizon Wireless agreed to settle a class-action lawsuit over early termination fees for $21 million, which bodes poorly for Sprint Nextel Corp. (S) and its own trial.

Early termination fees, which are incurred when a wireless subscriber breaks his or her contract before it ends, are in the sights of the Federal Communications Commission, which wants to construct a national framework for charging them.

In its way are consumer advocacy groups and several state lawsuits. Verizon Wireless removed one obstacle with its settlement, while Sprint appears to want to see its case carried through.

Verizon Wireless - jointly owned by Verizon Communications Inc. (VZ) and Vodafone Group PLC (VOD) - on Tuesday said the settlement resolves the plaintiffs' claims that it was unfairly charging fees for customers who broke out of their contracts early, although the company didn't admit to any wrongdoing. The settlement covers all of the lawsuits throughout the nation, according to Verizon Wireless spokesman Jim Gerace.

"This suit was a distraction," he said. "This was a quick way to resolve it."

Sprint, meanwhile, awaits a decision by Judge Bonnie Sabraw of Alameda County, Calif. Superior Court over whether it violated state law with its early termination fees. It is further along its case than Verizon Wireless, which faces the same judge and plaintiffs. But Verizon Wireless' quick action in resolving its dispute suggests a lack of confidence in the pending decision.

Treocentral: Jeepin' & Gabbin' Joyfully Hands-free
v
I am a proud owner of a Jeep Wrangler. In fact, the Jeep has been my primary mode of transportation for the last 15 years. Because I live in California, pretty much from April until Halloween, I have the joy of driving with the top down and skins off. Yeah, for those months, I’m happily wind-blown.

Due to a convergence of events, I found myself in a position to try something I didn’t think was possible – making phone calls hands-free from my Jeep while going 65 mph down the freeway. The existence of headsets with superb noise cancellation capabilities combined with the upcoming California hands-free law motivated me to try out some options (Bluetooth and corded). So buckle up and enjoy the ride…

Engadget: Matias Duarte, designer behind Sidekick and Helio, now developing Palm's next-gen UI
v
So we heard from a very reliable source that mobile user interface guru Matias Duarte -- who you may know as the man behind the Sidekick and Helio UI / user experiences -- actually left Helio late last year to join up with Palm. Although no announcement was made, we hear he and his gang of designers jumped ship (well before Helio completely flooded) to take on the monumental task of designing the UI for Palm's next-gen mobile OS (aka "Palm OS 2.0 or II"). His resume online now lists him as "Senior Director, Human Interface and User Experience" doing "Something new..." since September 2007; we got in touch with Palm, who confirmed that he's now under the company's employ.

Treocentral: Guide to Twitter
v
No Web 2.0 application's reputation precedes it like Twitter. It's the social network rage that everyone loves to hate or hates to love. Tech pundits recently converted are apt to write apologetics in the form of "why Twitter matters" introductions, explaining why critics just don't "get it," as though Twitter was the new EST.

Narcissism aside, the pundits do have one thing right. Twitter is certainly not a phenomenon that needs no introduction. Most web surfers either encounter someone's Twitter home page by accident, or by a friend's insistence ("you have to get on Twitter!"), only read messages — tweets, to use the technical term — like "Man, the burritos at Poncho's are dope!", "Ugh, have to drive Charlie to the airport" or "Watching all episodes of '24' in reverse order." Initial exposure to Twitter is like coming in late on a joke. No wonder people don't get it.

Treonauts Review: Aliph New Jawbone Bluetooth Headset
v
Treonauts has published a review of the Aliph New Jawbone Bluetooth Headset.

Overall, I think that the New Jawbone delivers on its promise of lighter, smaller and more comfortable noise cancellation headset – one that retains all of the best qualities of the original while adding a few of its own such as a more robust body, earbuds and earloop as well as a very complete accessory kit.

If money is no object then I can not more highly recommend to buy the New Jawbone – you will own the very best Bluetooth headset on the market with superb audio quality and great looks. Having said this, if you are more conscious of your budget then there is absolutely no doubt that the original Jawbone (see my review) costing $40 less continues to be a superb investment.

Treocentral: BodyGuardz vs. invisibleSHIELD
v
Comparing the 'feel' of the BodyGuardz vs the invisibleSHIELD I find that I prefer the feel of the BodyGuardz, as it is smoother and there isn't as noticeable of an 'edge' where the film ends and the surface of my Centro is exposed. As far as the look of the film, I cast my vote for the BodyGuardz, as the invisibleSHIELD looks rougher - sort of like an orange peel would look. The screen protectors both seem very capable of protecting your device equally, something I demand in a protector! Again, there is the slight orange peel look to the screen protector as well. I believe the invisibleSHIELD may be a bit thinner when it comes down to which is the thinner of the two, but from my experience - both are proficient at keeping your mobile devices protected and, hopefully, scratch-free.

I can't find fault with either brand when it comes to their protective properties, so I suppose it comes down to the matter of look and feel, which I give my vote to the BodyGuardz film. That, plus the fact that my package of invisibleSIELD was missing a protective film for the area of my Centro below my keypad, sways my overall vote for the BodyGuardz by NLU Products!
